Medical Cantonese

We have prepared this course to help create a healthcare workforce better equipped to care for the Cantonese-speaking diaspora. Language barriers remain a significant challenge to healthcare access for populations with limited English proficiency, even with the availability of in-person and telephone interpreters in most major hospitals. Many of us have witnessed healthcare providers attempting to "get by" without interpreters, often prioritizing efficiency at the expense of care quality. Moreover, interpreters alone cannot fully bridge the language and cultural gaps that impact the doctor-patient relationship. These challenges underscore the importance of building a healthcare workforce trained in both language and cultural sensitivity to improve care and access for the LEP limited English proficiency Chinese-speaking population.

In this course, designed for intermediate and advanced Cantonese speakers, we will introduce you to the vocabulary and phrases commonly encountered in clinical settings. Each chapter is focused on a specific specialty or group of specialties. At the end of each chapter, you’ll find practice phrases and mock interviews to test your understanding and skills. However, learning individual words and phrases is just the beginning; understanding their connotations and the cultural nuances behind them is crucial for clear and respectful communication.

The effort you put into mastering Medical Cantonese will not only improve your communication skills but will also help provide better care for your patients in the future. This course is designed for healthcare professionals, with a particular focus on the needs of medical students and resident physicians. However, it is open to anyone with an interest in improving their Medical Cantonese skills and fostering better communication with Cantonese-speaking patients.
